It’s important to talk to a lawyer when you’re buying a piece of land with or without a structure (house/cottage). Section 50 of the Planning Act prevents the division of land into smaller parcels (pieces) unless an exception applies. A popular exception is getting consent from your municipality to divide the land. It can be that simple. This was the case here.
