Last night, our client was going to be put on a plane and be removed from Canada back to Serbia. We were successful in deferring his removal. Showing up late in the evening at Toronto Pearson International Airport and fighting for this client was extremely stressful but ultimately rewarding. The smile on his face was priceless. We made a difference in someone’s life last night!
This client was misinformed, by someone (non-lawyer), that he could apply for a work permit at the airport upon entry to Canada from Serbia. When he landed on June 13, 2022 into Canada and tried to apply for a work permit, his passport was seized by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) and he was to be removed last night (June 14, 2022).
It’s important to always speak to a lawyer and seek advice to make sure your actions are lawful.

This is us working hard on a Friday evening for an urgent motion that was being heard in court the following Tuesday.
Our client, a large commercial tenant (restaurant), was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and fell into rent arrears. The commercial landlord decided to evict our client. BUT…during the pandemic, the legislature passed a moratorium which forbid the eviction of commercial tenants during the non-enforcement period as set out under part IV of the Commercial Tenancies Act. We will be arguing our motion before a Judge on Tuesday to hold the commercial landlord accountable for its breach of the Commercial Tenancies Act.
